Rabid Animals

Rabies is an acute viral zoonotic disease that causes encephalitis, inflammation of the brain, in mammals. A zoonotic disease is one that is passed between animals and humans. It can fatal to a human victim if left untreated. There is a vaccine that prevents rabies, and if the case is caught early on the condition can be treated. The virus is transmitted through saliva, and often from animal to human via dog bite.

Rabies Symptoms

  • Fever
  • Depression
  • Confusion
  • Muscle spasms
  • Extreme thirst
  • Loss of muscle tone
  • Salivation
  • Sensitivity to light and touch

Treatment

Most rabies treatment focuses on analgesia when severe become severe to the point of demonstrating intense aggression. Even if a victim has been vaccinated for rabies, they will have to receive follow-up vaccines to make sure that the virus will not establish itself and multiply. If you have never been vaccinated and you are bitten by a dog or other rabid animal, you can still fight off an infection with a vaccination series after the bite.

Keeping Pet Owners Responsible

If you or someone you know has contracted rabies from a dog bite or other type of animal attack, you have the right to hold the pet owner responsible for any losses you suffered.
