Preventing Drowning: Pool Safety

With summer quickly approaching, one of the greatest risks to children becomes more and more prevalent. This is the backyard or neighborhood swimming pool. Swimming is one of the summer’s most enjoyed activities and a source of endless hours of entertainment. Unfortunately, the backyard pool, as fun as it is, can be deadly. Water safety is important at any age.

A drowning can happen very quickly and in less than an inch of water. Filled bathtubs, swimming pools, wading pools, hot tubs, and spas are all a danger to children of all ages. To combat this danger, there are a number of things the owner of a pool can do to make his or her pool safer for people.

  • Install a fence. Installing a fence may seem like a huge hassle but it can prevent a drowning really easily. In order for a fence to be effective, it needs to be at least 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall on all sides. In addition, the fence should have a self-closing and self-latching gate. This prevents people from accidentally forgetting to close the gate. In addition, the lock on the gate should be out of a child’s reach. If there is not a lock and latch on the gate, there may as well not be a fence.

  • Install a pool alarm or cover. This will alert people when there is someone in the pool. The pool cover should prevent children from getting into the pool. If there is a pool cover in place, it is still important to monitor children’s presence by the pool. A pool cover may not prevent a child from falling into the pool and then it is more difficult for the child to get out of the pool because of the cover.

  • Remove all toys from the pool when the pool is not in use. Children are frequently tempted to attempt to fish their toys out of the water without supervision. They commonly fall into the pool when attempting to get to their toys.

  • Do not use vests, water wings, rafts, and tubes as a substitute for constant adult supervision. These devices are not effective in preventing drowning. In addition, they can give a false sense of security.

  • Remove ladders from an above ground pool when it is not being used
