Suspect Nursing Home Abuse?

The reality is tragic and deplorable. At nursing homes across the United States, our elderly loved ones are mistreated and neglected. Both their emotional and mental health can be damaged by simply being ignored by staff, or even worse, abused and molested. If you have had to place the care of your loved ones in someone else’s hands, it is critical that you be aware of their rights and what to do should they be violated.

Warning Signs of Nursing Home Abuse

Look for a drastic change in mood or temperament. This can be difficult if your loved one suffers from a disease like Alzheimer’s, in which they are prone to becoming disoriented and forgetful. Be aware of any marks or bruises that were not there during your last visit. Bed sores are an indication that your loved one is not being attended to properly.

Collecting Evidence

Take pictures of any visible signs of abuse or neglect. This could include bruises, scratches, burns, bed sores, and lacerations. Talk to your loved one and visit them often. Frequent visits will help you be more familiar with the staff and how they treat the resident. You may also want to ask questions to roommates, if there are any, and to the administrative staff of the nursing home to get an idea of who regularly provides care to your loved one.
