An estimated 1.4 million people suffer a traumatic brain injury in the United States each year. Causes
The leading causes of TBIs are slips and falls. The group most vulnerable to traumatic brain injuries is the elderly because they are most prone to accidents like slipping in the shower or falling down stairs. Second to slips and falls are automobile collisions. This type of accident mostly affects teenagers ages 15 to 19.
Signs and Symptoms
It is sometimes difficult to detect that a person has suffered a TBI because signs could take days or even weeks to appear. Some symptoms include:
- Headaches or neck pain that will not go away
- Difficulty remembering or making decisions
- Blurred vision
- Ringing in the ears
- Increased sensitivity to lights, sounds, distractions
