OSHA fines Fond du Lac plant for dust explosion
Posted on Thursday, February 23rd, 2012 at 8:34 pm
The Fond du Lac plant of Milk Specialties Co. has been fined $72,000 by OSHA following an investigation into a dust fire and explosion that occurred last August.
Dust in a machine caused the explosion, which sent heavy smoke throughout the five-story facility. No one was injured in the explosion. OSHA cited Milk Specialties Co., a company that makes liquid whey products into dried whey protein concentrate powder, for a willful violation for combustible dust hazards and two other safety violations.
OSHA has previously found safety hazards at Milk Specialties Co. facilities, which totaled 52 violations. The company denies an explosion occurred, but rather a milk product began to smoulder, producing smoke.

Sex offender arrested again in Vernon County

A 26 year-old man charged with child sexual abuse has been arrested for the second time.
The Vernon County man was arrested and sent to prison for three years in 2007 after he pleaded guilty to second-degree sexual assault. He is a registered sex offender originally accused of abusing boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 11 years-old over a three-year period.
He was arrested again after the Wisconsin Department of Corrections determined he violated the boundaries set on his GPS bracelet. The man notified his parole officer of the violation. He is scheduled to appear in court at the end of this month.

Dog attacks anchor on live TV

A Denver news anchor was bitten on the face by an Argentine mastiff on her live show last week.
She was interviewing a firefighter who had saved the dog the day before from an icy lake. The dog’s owner and the dog were also invited to be a part of the segment. The dog was calm throughout the interview, but it was when the anchor woman knelled down to get closer that the dog attacked.
She was immediately taken to the hospital where she had reconstructive surgery. Doctors say the surgery was successful, and she should be back at work in a few weeks. The dog will be quarantined for ten days for the attack.

Pharmaceutical error could cause unintended pregnancy
Posted on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 at 6:54 pm
Nearly a million birth control pills are being recalled by the drug manufacturer Pfizer after a mix up with the hormonal contraceptives and placebos.
The specific brand involved in the recall is Lo/Ovral-38 and its generics, norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol. The packages affected by the recall have an expiration date between July 31, 2013, and March 31, 2014. A 32 year-old woman from Georgia has already sued Pfizer after she became pregnant while taking the birth control pills.
Pfizer strongly encourages women who believe they have a defective package to begin using non-hormonal forms of birth control immediately. The mix up is not believed to cause harm to the baby should a woman become unintentionally pregnant.
