Fresh Express Recalls Romaine Salads

by Administrator 15. July 2010 00:37

Fresh Express, based out of Cincinnatti, is recalling their romaine lettuce salads as a precautionary measure. The subsidiary of Chiquita Brands said it received information that one of its Hearts of Romaine Lettuce packages tested positive for E. coli bacteria.

According to Food Business News, the recalled products consist of, "Romaine lettuce salad products with expired use-by-dates of July 8 to July 12 and an “S” in the product code." So far, there have been no reported illnesses. This is the company's second recall since May, when some of their products were found to be contaminated with salmonella.

The Argus Leader reports, "E. coli can cause diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting and fevers. Healthyadults usually recover within a week, but young children and the elderly are at greater risk for developing serious kidney damage and death."

Contaminated food products can make you seriously ill. If you or someone you know has suffered as the result of contaminated food, contact a Kenosha defective products lawyer at Habush, Habush & Rottier, S.C.

14-year-old Kenosha girl killed in pedestrian accident

by Administrator 18. June 2010 04:25

A 14-year-old Kenosha girl was killed in a motor vehicle accident as she was walking along a street Thursday night.  The girl was walking with a friend in the dark when a Honda Accord struck the girl who was traveling on the "paved and traveled" part of the road.  The two girls were walking westbound on County Highway N when the Honda came up from behind them, also traveling westbound.  The 42-year-old female driver of the Honda said that when she came to the top of a hill she saw the two girls walking and tried to avoid them but it was too late.

The woman voluntarily submitted a blood sample to test for impairments, but authorities believe that she was not driving impaired.  No names have been released to the public yet and the incident is still undergoing an investigation.

Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of all those involved in this tragic accident.

Summer farm safety for children

by Administrator 10. June 2010 07:30

Summer is here and that means that farming accidents involving youth are soon to spike.  Research shows that the prevelance of heavy machinery and increased outdoor activity presents a high likelihood that children will get hurt playing outdoors in farming communities.  Several different government agencies are offering advice to parents who own dangerous farming equipment.  The Childhood Agricultural Safety Network campaign stresses the importance of keeping children away from tractors.  Safe play areas are also important.  It is good to have an area where the children can play while supervervised as you work.  It is dangerous to bring children into the workplace in an agricultural setting.

When considering assigning a farming task to a child, consult the North American Guidelines for Children's Agricultural Tasks.  The guidelines expressed in this text are based on an understanding of childhood growth and development and take into consideration the child's mental and physical capability when performing a manual task.  Make sure to also consult these guidelines before doing outdoor recreational activities such as hay rides, petting zoos and picking fresh produce.
