A Janesville couple is suing the city of Rome after a fireworks display caused them permanent injuries.

The man in charge of the fireworks had a permit to put on a show the weekend of July 16 when eleven spectators were injured. Visitors were sitting less than forty feet from the launch site; spectators should be 350 feet from the launching site.

The woman says that a shell from the fireworks hit her left eye, causing her glasses to break. She is now permanently blind in her left eye. She also suffered scars to her face and lost much of her hearing. The man is facing charges of second-degree reckless endangerment, injury by negligent handling of explosives, and second-degree reckless injury.

Both the woman and her husband suffered injuries are are asking for a combined $100,000 from the city of Rome.
