A recent bill in Illinois, known as the HEALTH Act, will limit how much a victim of nursing home neglect can be awarded in a court case.
The bill will cap damages for victims at $250,000, and it will also make it harder for victims to prove that they deserve punitive damages. Opponents of the bill have said that it will only prevent patients of nursing homes who have suffered severe injuries from receiving enough money to compensate them.
Bills of this nature have already been repeatedly vetoed in other states. The bill has not yet been voted on in Illinois.
