Representatives urge Congress to pass Safe Cosmetics Act

Posted under Uncategorized

Representatives from Illinois, Massachusetts, and Wisconsin recently introduced a bill in Congress called the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011, and they are urging members of Congress to pass the bill.

For many years, the FDA has not been able to regulate cosmetic products, which studies have shown to contain at least 12,500 different chemicals that have never been tested for safety. Because of this, many people have suffered health problems, unaware that they could have been caused by their makeup or personal hygiene products. With the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011, cosmetic products would undergo random sample tests, much like food products, and the FDA would be allowed to recall cosmetic products that are deemed unsafe.

With this bill, the representatives are hoping to prevent illnesses in users of cosmetic products. According to Wisconsin Rep. Tammy Baldwin, "The Safe Cosmetics Act is critical to ensuring that personal care products do not compromise the health of workers and consumers."
