A crane working on the expansion of the Butte des Morts bridge collapsed on Thursday claiming the life of a man working below and injuring the crane’s operator. This is the second fatal construction accident in the U.S. Highway 41 expansion project.
The crane collapsed while lifting a 52-ton concrete girder at around 9:00 that morning. The man whose life was cut short by this tragic accident worked for the company that manufactures the girders, which are used as the foundation for the roadways across the bridge.
Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) investigators are investigating the scene for any safety violations that may have contributed to the accident.
Our deepest condolences go out to Joseph R. Bidler’s family.
