Toyota prepares for settlement over defective ETCS

Posted under Car Accidents

U.S. District Judge James Selna announced on Thursday, December 12 that sudden acceleration lawsuits against Toyota will be put on a halt after the company expressed a plan to hold settlement conferences regarding legal claims filed against the company.

Toyota’s decision came after its loss over a lawsuit filed in Oklahoma City, where the jury decided that Toyota’s ill-designed electronic throttle control system (ETCS) caused unintended speeding that likely led to property damages, physical injuries, and even death.

Plaintiffs’ legal representatives believe cases of unintended acceleration rose after Toyota installed the ETCS-i system in its vehicles. The ETCS-i system allows Toyota units to electronically control the vehicle’s throttle valve opening.
